One man's junk is another's treasure and all that

Recently I got a job lot of second hand Malifaux minis and thought I'd run through the contents here.

First up, three quarters of the first Hoffman starter; Charles himself, a Watcher and a Hunter.  As I don't have a Mechanical Attendant I don't see these getting much use as a crew themselves, but I'll prep and paint them someday for the fun of it!

Next a mostly whole selection of chaps made using the male character kit for Through the Breach (I believe).  The duster/hat guy could potentially proxy as something Guild (with a fix as he is missing a sword), but the Neverborn dude with a gatling gun is utter madness!

I also got Sonnia Criid (alternate version) - thanks to Wargaming Threads for help in identifying!

Next is the metal Samael Hopkins (picture not great as he is primed and has a basecoat on some leather).

Here we have the first plastic version of The Scribe, Lucius' totem.

Next is an on-sprue version of the Restless Spirit in red - have to admit I never saw much point in the coloured plastic stuff as it'll end up painted anyway!

Here's a part painted Ama No Zako:

Next up was a pair of Crooligans (the best two IMO):

The box also included McCabe (foot and mounted) and the three Ruffians from his starter box (no Sidir or Luna but I do already have this box so it's no great shakes!)

Next was Somer and Lenny from the previous starter - these have weirdly oversized scenic elements which have claimed a foot each from the gremlins... if I can salvage the feet I might use these as alternate options for my other Somer and Lenny.

Here's McTavish and his big boy gator:

And a mostly complete Rail/Metal Golem (which to be honest I might just turn into something for Dracula's America):

Next up was a Pale Rider:

A pretty much painted Killjoy was also in the box:

As well as a selection of minis from the Plague keyword.  Some of these I might press into service for Dracula's America.

Next is the previous Lady Justice starter - some on sprue, with the Death Marshals salvageable:

Then there was a Sanctioned Spellcaster that will fit in with my Witch Hunters, an Austringer and a Pathfinder:

Next was a selection of Guard keyword minis.

And the Dashel from the previous Lucius box - as I have no Dispatcher I might use this to take him as a second master, probably in his Dashel2 form.

Then there was Johan - I've got both male and female versions now!

Next up is a metal Lord Chompy Bits - this will definitely get used in Dracula's America:

Then there was a selection of Obliteration keyword minis, which most notably included Karina, so I could feasibly get say Tara2 and make use of these all together:

Next was some Freikorps, including notably Hannah Lovelace, which I think is an awesome model so I'm really happy to have it!

Almost finally was the highlight of the box - the now OOP Avatar of Amalgamation (counts as Arcane Emissary):

Finally there was this mini that I am yet to identify from either the Malifaux range or otherwise - all I know is it is metal!

If you recognise her, please let me know!

In all, whilst it was a very random selection, there's lot of usable bits and pieces in there - the Avatar, Hannah, Lady Justice and Obliteration stuff in particular stands out and definitely made it represent good value for me.

State of the ADHS Nation - December 2021

It has been a while hasn’t it?  Between new puppy, brain gremlins, work and more there just hasn’t been much spare mental capacity for hobby.  There’s been no painting for weeks – and barely any assembly/prep.  Just one of those things, but I’m trying to formulate ways to start making progress once more.

If you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed I had a birthday at the end of October – and it was something of a milestone so I got spoilt!  First up my better half decided to go for a huge stack of Malifaux boxes – which I supplemented through some canny purchases (including some pre-owned bits) using some gifted birthday money.  This is what has joined the collection (some has also been ordered from various store clearouts of old M2 stock on Black Friday so I’m waiting for those):-

From Trials… I got this awesome 10mm scale ruined castle.  It’s going to be perfect for all sorts of settings in 10mm, but will be a great focal point for my Rampanthammer in particular:

It comes in two layers that easily and cleanly fit together – I’m very impressed!

My workplace had also done a collection for my birthday, and as some colleagues know my better half they tapped her up for ideas – and she suggested Pendraken gift vouchers… so now I’ve got the things to replace my ACW tribute project in 10mm (I need the space after all), I’ve finally taken the plunge on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth vs Ottoman Empire project I’ve had in my mind for ages and I even had enough left over for some Aztecs to do 10mm Tribal plus some 15mm market tables for Burning Sands (and Of Gods and Mortals etc etc).  Not bad at all!

I’ve ordered the rulebook for Gamma Wolves (thanks to Trials… helpfully suggesting mecha as a small side project when I had some cash burning a hole in my pocket over the autumn) – and I’ve got a selection of Reaper CAV mecha minis that I intend to use.  These seem great value – much cheaper than Battletech options so a good way to dip the toe into the mecha wargaming world.

The new hotness in wargaming right now seems to be The Silver Bayonet – well I didn’t want to miss the hype train (as it’s a fun setting hot-or-otherwise!) so I’ve got that rulebook coming too.  I also had enough cash spare to get some test minis from the 18mm AB range (via Eureka UK) – enough for a ragtag bunch of monster hunters and a few opponents to boot. Other enemies etc will be a future purchase for sure once I can get a feel for how AB scales up against MM, RPE, AA etc.

There’ll be more on both Gamma Wolves and The Silver Bayonet once I’ve got them and can digest and sort more concrete plans!

So whilst the ‘doing’ might still be proving tricky, the plotting, planning and acquisition side is certainly continuing! 😊

The Beast Within (well, and Ferdinand Vogel)

I was looking at second hand Malifaux stuff and chanced across Ferdinand Vogel and The Beast Within - now, these are currently only available with The Scorpius (which I'm not a fan of) so I took the opportunity to add Vogel and his alter ego to Marcus' pool of hires.

First the dapper Ferdinand himself:

And his still-rather-dapper The Beast Within form:

I mean, a werewolf in a top hat, what's not to like about that?!

Marcus arrives

I hadn't originally intended to take up the Beast/Chimera keyword(s) - but when I saw some M2E boxes going cheap I thought, what the heck!

Of course, without Marcus' Core Box it would have been a non-starter:

This gives me Marcus (and with less tactical rock than the M3E version, bonus!), Myranda, the Jackalope, a Razorspine Rattler, a Sabertooth Cerberus and Cojo.

I decided to add a couple of other beastly options - an additional Razorspine Rattler (as it was cheap, why not!), and the Blessed of December:

In M3E Marcus is dual-faction with Neverborn, so I used it as a good excuse to get Adze for if/when we use Marcus as an NB master:

It's a pleasingly disturbing miniature so I'm glad to have an excuse to paint one as a gaming piece.

Finally, in M3E Marcus' Core Box includes a new minion - Order Initiates.  Thankfully Wyrd offer 'special order' opportunities for players of previous editions (and cheapskates like me who pick up M2E core boxes) to obtain the new miniatures only available in the M3E Core Boxes.  So, as this is probably the only 'special order' box I'll buy - here's a picture for posterity:

Interesting, right? 😂

Arcanists OOK and Guild Versatile

I found a couple of places selling off their old 2nd Edition Malifaux stock, so took the opportunity to add a couple of pieces that I wouldn't normally have gone for.

First, the Mobile Toolkit - an out of keyword choice for Foundry, but it's cheap even with the OOK tax and can buff and heal constructs (of which the Foundry keyword has a few!)

For the Guild I got the Pale Rider - as a Versatile choice he can go with both our Family and Journalist keywords:

Provides a nice centrepiece for the Guild too!

Last Blossom Reinforcements

Today I'm sharing the assembled reinforcements I got for the Last Blossom keyword - starting with the Crime Syndicate box.

First up, the yari-wielding master sensei Yamaziko:

She was easy to put together - but rather awkward to take a decent photograph of!

The box also included a pair of Katanaka Crime Bosses:

These were pretty easy to put together - there were a few fiddly bits on the gaskmask/backpack filter tank areas but far from the worst to glue!

Finally for the Crime Syndicate a duo of Katanaka Snipers:

No problems at all with these two long-range killers.

I also had the Karmic Debt box - with the last remaining member of the Order of Balance, Minako Rei, the star of the box:

Minako was pretty easy to assemble - I particularly like the katashiro hanging from her waist....which brings us on to the Katashiro that she can summon in-game!

These were easy assembly jobs - nothing too taxing!

Finally the box includes the Wanyudo - this can either be a Versatile hire or can be summoned in-game through the Final Reward ability on Karmic Fate:

The Wanyudo is made up of only three pieces (the wheel and the face on each side) so is possibly the easiest Malifaux mini to assemble!

This marks the completion of the currently purchased Malifaux models... I'm contemplating a few more crews at some point - Pandora, Kaeris, Toni, Hamelin, Zoraida are all possibles... 🤔

Filth-Lickers

You may recall that I added a small batch of reinforcements to the Oni keyword - the Akaname.  The pack includes three of these filth-licking demons for Asami to summon:

These were easy to assemble - the one checking out the contents of an old bucket was easier than it looks.  The only slightly tricky bit was the end of the tongue of the one on the right - the bit with the apple core has a very small contact point with the larger part of the tongue.
