Philiskos the Healer

Philiskos is an old man - but he feels the calling to heal those in need more than ever.  As a young man Philiskos studied the teachings of Hippocrates of Kos and took to them as though born for it.  He has spent decades now wandering the world, dispensing medicine and aid to people in pain and distress from Persia to Gaul and back.

The increase in activity by bands of warriors has not gone unnoticed by the Healer - he views the violence as a symptom of a greater malady and seeks to find the cause.

This is a Footsore mini from their Mortal Gods range - thankfully it was single-piece!  I rescued him for Broken Legions when I was getting rid of the rest of that range from my collection.

The Spartan

A warrior claiming to be 'the last remaining true son of Sparta' has appeared amongst the warbands fighting the shadow war taking place.  The various chieftains, centurions and nobles that he has worked with aren't sure about his claims - but it is true enough he carries a bronze shield with the mark of the Lambda and fights with the skill and fury of the warriors of old from that famous city-state.

This is from Footsore where he is called 'Adrostos, Captain of the Lochos' - I added a metal Spartan shield also from Footsore to complete the look.

Zina of Dacia

A famed wise woman from Dacia, Zina is sought by people from across the world who desire her counsel - some sources say she has the gift of prognostication, others that she can heal wounds and diseases that have baffled even the most skilled physicians.

Now in the twilight of her life, she has taken to the road - travelling from place to place, earning coin for her services as she goes.  She seems to know all about the secret war being waged - but none seem to know where, or with what, her loyalties lie.

I got this as part of a Kickstarter by Tomb Guardians - she's now available as part of their Amazon Heroes range, where she is called a 'Female Amazon Shaman'.

Broken Legions Auxiliaries

As some readers may know, I got rid of almost all the Mortal Gods 28mm stuff - but when I was going through it I picked out a couple of miniatures that I thought could fit nicely into Broken Legions as Auxiliaries.

First the Healer mini:

I'll come up with some suitable rules that should work nicely for him.

I also kept the miniature Footsore call 'Adrostos, Captain of the Lochos'.  I've given him a Spartan shield and intend to make him a mysterious anachronism in the time of Broken Legions:

I'll be using the Demigod rules for him as they are very flexible for all sorts of characters I feel.

Otonia, Favoured of Hera

Hera, known for her faithfulness to Zeus (not that he deserves it!) still has need of agents to carry out her will amongst the mortals. Possibly her most favoured champion is called Otonia - a skilled warrior and a devout follower of the Cult of Hera.

Otonia carries a sword and shield said to be gifted to her by the Queen of Olympus herself - with these Hera's Champion fights at her patron's behest across the known world.  She will fight alongside warbands where it helps her cause, and can often be found supporting the various bands of Argonauts that are fighting for Hera's glory.

This is from Footsore's Mortal Gods Mythic range.  I backed the Kickstarter just to get this miniature to include in the Broken Legions collection (of course by the time I actually painted her I could have just got her direct retail but never mind!)

Septus Caemia, Returned from Tartarus

When learned men speak of the undead most know only of the skeletons raised by the Necromancers or the stories of lemures haunting the living.  But there is one being that has been encountered in recent times - not truly living nor dead, but something in between.

Septus Caemia was once a legionary in the great armies of Rome - but they were no hero; they gambled,  killed for sport, held the gods in contempt and finally they betrayed their fellow legionaries when they deserted somewhere in Parthia.  Soon enough they were found, killed by bandits and left in a ditch to rot - an ignominious end to an thoroughly unpleasant person.

Caemia found no rest in death - Tartarus awaited... but something happened and instead of the punishment that was due the legionary found themselves in Anatolia; physically changed but as wicked as ever they were in life.

As the powers wage their war in the shadows Caemia now works alongside the most desperate and degenerate warbands - its thirst for gold and violence seemingly unquenchable.

This is Septus Caemia - Undead Legionary from Fenris Games.  As with others I've posted, I view the Demigod as an option to represent all sorts of powerful warriors - why and how did Septus return from Tartarus? That's a question only the gods know the answer to...

Callianessa

Callianessa seems to be strength itself given human form - her exploits are legendary, earning her the nickname of 'the Herakles of the new age'.

She seeks to test her strength and courage wherever she roams - and working with the various warbands seeking ancient artefacts provides her with many such opportunities.  So far, she has yet to be found wanting - with her heavy mace she has destroyed monsters and seen off demigods in single combat. She is said to have even toppled a towering stone column on an enemy camp with a single swing of her mighty weapon.

Ages ago now I backed a Kickstarter by Tomb Guardians for a range of Amazons - this was one of the couple of miniatures I pledged for specifically for use in Broken Legions. (Oh and, yes, the colour scheme I picked is on the nose but I couldn't resist!)

Caciro, Son of Erbina

Caciro is a likeable man.  He spends his time travelling across the known world - never settling too long in one place, but making friends as he goes.  He is a skilled archer, and earns coin to fuel his wanderlust by serving with the countless warbands that are seeking... something or other, Caciro doesn't worry too much about the details; he won't be around long enough in Rome, or Greece, or Egypt, or Germania to have to deal with the fall out of the secret war being waged.

Caciro originally hails from Hispania, although it has been years since he set foot in that land.  He doesn't talk about it, but he is actually a child of the goddess Erbina and a mortal man.  Being a son of a goddess of hunting no doubt contributes to his prodigious skill with a bow - but he never admits it to the captains, princes and priests that hire him!

This was a monthly miniature from Footsore.  It's a Greek archer, but I made him into a wandering demigod instead.

Geiasca the Amazon

A proud Amazon warrior, Geiasca serves her own people above all others; but when the aims of the competing warbands of Romans, Greeks, Egyptians and others coincide with them she will fight alongside the outsiders... for a time.

Although not one for conversation or camaraderie, Geiasca's skill with a bow is famed meaning she is never without captains or chieftains trying to secure her assistance.

I knew I wanted a hunter style mini for my Amazon Auxilia option - after looking around I opted for the Seratra the Foundling mini from Lucid Eye's Savage Core: Age of Ice range. I particularly liked that she wasn't near naked - there's a very small piece of midriff but that's it. I deliberately opted for a pretty natural palette - a lot of the other auxilia are pretty colourful and I thought this would make Geiasca stand out in her own way amongst the rest of the Broken Legions collection.

The Kushites - Hêtshepsu's Retinue

"Get off me! Arrgh!! Help!" screamed the prone Roman legionary as a warcat savaged his left leg.

Hêtshepsu walked toward the man calmly, and in a gentle tone ordered his pet, Nebibi, off.

"Now, Roman, tell me what you and your accursed band were planning in this most holy temple?" the chieftain addressed the bloodied legionary.

The Roman spat "I'll not answer to you, Kushite scum"

With a flash Hêtshepsu swung his heavy golden scepter into the face of his enemy and the legionary fell silent.

"Well if you won't tell me, I suppose we'll have to hunt down more of your people to get to the root of this."

And now for the final warband for Broken Legions - my homebrew crew, the Kushites.  These, except where mentioned otherwise, are all from Warlord's range - but last I checked they weren't available as they are due to be re-released later in 2021.

Anyway, first up the Chieftain, Hêtshepsu and his beloved warcat Nebibi:

I gave the Chieftain a spare shield and clipped the leash off the cat so he could be based separately.

Bringing some divine/magical power to the band is the Priest of Apedemak - called Anok Sabé.  Of course, as a priest of a lion god he had to be accompanied by a lion! The rather hefty lion is called Baraka and is from DeeZee Miniatures:

A pair of Champions round out the Heroes choices.  Here's Mkhai (L) and Khenti (R):

Carrying the warband's standard is a proud chap named Ashai:

Providing a strong core to the warband are the warriors (L-R) Wati, Mdjai, Buikhu, Nomti and Urshé:

Of course, with the Kushites being famed archers it was important to have a strong contingent of bow-armed troops too! (L-R) Shenti, Sebi, Benipé, Adjo and Mshai:

I'm really pleased with how they've turned out - I'm glad I waited until I had suitable skin tone paints from Foundry for these guys.  As with the rest of the Broken Legions collection they feature tufts from Tajima 1 and Boon Town Metals so place them all in the same world.

So, that's all the warbands for Broken Legions - but there's still plenty to come; auxilia and wandering monsters... then there's the small matter of playing some games! 😆

Thea, Daughter of Enyo

The warrior Thea is not one for talking - she lives solely to wage war.  She has fought for and against every empire, tribe and kingdom, seemingly at whim.

Thea is a skilled warrior, stalking the battlefield like some manifestation of war itself - it is no surprise that many call her Daughter of Enyo; for surely only the child of that goddess of war and destruction could be so at home in conflict.

Thea is a Bad Squiddo miniature - Thea, Amazon Champion.  It's a single piece casting so was nice and easy to get ready.  The Demigod option I view as fluid - so I'll leave it up to you to decide if she really is a daughter of Enyo or not! She's a pretty tough warrior this one - I'd certainly rather have her on my side than appearing across the table from my warband!

Ubara-Mulge the Chaldean

A devout man and priest of an almost-forgotten god of the Underworld, Ubara-Mulge traces his line back through to the times when the Chaldeans were a mighty people.  He knows many prayers of supplication to his patron god and, using the powers granted to him, he is able to raise and command the restless dead – an ability that makes him feared and hated in equal measure.

Ubara-Mulge is seeking ancient knowledge to supplement his studies – his deepest desire is to summon forth his god to claim the lands of men for himself (although it’s no surprise he keeps this quiet from the warbands who hire him).

This is our option for the Necromancer Auxilia.  Ubara-Mulge is the special Necromancer 'book mini' for Warlords of Erehwon (they call it 'Arise O Restless Dead').  The skeletons for him to summon in games are from Wargames Atlantic's Classic Fantasy range (I picked up a single sprue from eBay).  These are perfect for this project - I had tried the Warlord Erehwon skeletons first but they were absolutely horrendous (separate feet, y'wha?!) so got binned - thankfully Wargames Atlantic released much better skeletons!

The Argonauts - The Queen's Hand

Hippias, named the Devoted for his unwavering dedication to Hera, entered the Heraion.  He approached the statue of his Goddess and laid a small golden talisman at her feet between the flickering candles and burning incense.

"O, Honoured Hera, of goddesses most excellent far, thine am I, all things are thine, and thou sittest authentic Queen of Olympus, and we fear no other female hand" the warrior said, as much with his heart as with his voice.

From his left Hippias caught a glimpse of the Oracle Clio.  She smiled gently as she approached, her arms open in greeting. "Hippias, the Queen will be most pleased at your offering - if you would let me, I can direct you to where more treasures await. Their liberation at the hand of those dedicated to blessed Hera would greatly please the Queen of all gods..."

Another warband is finished for Broken Legions - and this time it is The Argonauts (aka the shoehorn to allow people to use ancient Greek minis in the game).  Except where mentioned, these are all from Warlord.

Argonaut warbands are headed up by an Argonaut Captain - so here's Hippias the Devoted:

A pair of Heraclean Champions provides some muscle - here's Teukros (L) and Xuthos (R):

And rounding out the hero-level warband options an Orphean Champion called Icarion (L) and an Oracle called Clio of Mycenae (R):

Clio is a Gangs of Rome miniature from Footsore (Tisiphone).

Of course, you can't have an Argonauts warband without some Argonauts! First up, a trio of spear-armed chaps (L-R) Mydon, Agetos and Pythios:

And some with a mixture of xiphos and kopis style blades. These are (L-R) Iobates, Danaos, Koinos and Hypenor:

Using up the rest of the Warlord games sprue are a couple of Mercenary Hoplites.  I tried to make them visually different by using grey, which hopefully still complements the purple and white of the rest of the warband. These are called Eurybotas (L) and Ombrion (R):

Adding a little ranged firepower are a couple of archers from Victrix.  These are Diokles (L) and Anaxis (R):

I've once again kept the same basing theme across all the Broken Legions collection to place them in the same world.
