Vladimir Forestkin - Priest of Taal

A Priest of Taal, Vladimir is attuned to the wild places.  Feeling the shift in the energies of the world following the comet's fall Vladimir felt compelled to travel to Mordheim.  He fights alongside the warbands that are loosely aligned against the forces of ruin and death, bringing his skill with his stone spear and the prayers to his wild god with him.

This is an OOP Amber College Wizard - I thought the mini fitted the bill for a Priest of Taal so added him to the Hireling Agency.

Vladik from the North - Kislevite Kossar

A member of the Ungol people of Kislev, Vladik is proud of his heritage.  He fights in the traditional style of the Kossar; with battle axe and bow.  He has spent years in the armies of Kislev, fighting back the threat of Chaos from the Wastes.

Times are hard in Kislev and Vladik has travelled South to the Empire to seek his fortune, perhaps one day he will return to his homeland, but for now he sells his martial skills in return for gold crowns.  Able to fight the enemy at both range and in close combat, Vladik is a welcome hireling to any warband that is willing to pay his fee.

This is a Kislev Kossar (strangely enough) from the ultimately rather short-lived range (other than the Winged Lancers and Ice Queen who were around a lot longer of course!).

Verminmaster Vritch - Clan Moulder Packmaster

An ambitious Packmaster from the infamous Clan Moulder, Vritch has come to Mordheim to see first-hand the effects of the Warpstone on the vermin of that cursed city.  He herds these mutated rats into battle, testing them for strength, speed, aggression and useful mutations.

Vritch himself is an old metal Packmaster - the rats are all newer plastic ones (but all with various mutations and 'enhancements').

Valdnar Bronzebristles - Dwarf Ironbreaker

Valdnar is an Ironbreaker and proud of it.  He was fighting against Night Goblins of the Iron Moon tribe when he became separated from his comrades by a cave-in.  Following the only path he could find, Valdnar tracked the goblins for weeks until he surfaced in a ruined blacksmith's – clearly of Dwarven origin.

Valdnar looked around; the smith's was in a human city, but the buildings were ruined, there was a foul stench of death and the sound of fighting could be heard from a dozen armed clashes.  If there was a secret tunnel between this hellscape and the underground home of his people, he would need to protect it to prevent harm to his clan!

To my tastes Marauder had the best Dwarf minis - I acquired him purely because I wanted an Ironbreaker in the Hireling Agency!

Ulbrecht the Beast - Middenheimer

The Cult of Ulric has many followers, particularly in the great city-state of Middenheim.  Amongst the most devout are known as the Wolf-Kin – fanatical warrior bands who wander the North of the Empire looking for servants of ruin.  Ulbrecht was a member of one such band once.

After one battle with a tribe of man-beasts, his band celebrated in honour of Ulric.  Much ale was drunk, war songs were sung and Ulric was pleased.  However when Ulbrecht woke up, he was surrounded by the remains of his brothers – and he was soaked in blood.

Knowing only combat and prayers to Ulric, Ulbrecht could not comprehend what had happened.  He stumbled panicked into the woodland and was soon set upon by vile beasts wielding crude weapons of black steel – Ulbrecht felt it; the touch of his god, the touch of the wolf and he changed.

After tearing the beastmen limb from limb Ulbrecht felt the call to head to Mordheim – he would find much evil to destroy in the name of Ulric there, and his god had given him the strength to do it.

This is a (very) old Citadel Werewolf mini that I picked up long ago on a whim.

Yoritomo Ujiro - Shugenja from Far-Off Nippon

The members of the Mantis Clan of Nippon are the most likely to be encountered in places like Marienburg, Remas or L'Anguille – they are traders and diplomats in the main, but also mercenaries and adventurers.

Ujiro is one such mercenary – but he is also a Shugenja, a sorcerer.  He wields elemental magics of sea and storm and will gladly trade his skills for the golden coins of the men of the West.

This is from the long-defunct Clan War game set in the Legend of the 5 Rings world.  I painted the hand as though invoking some magic power using Nihilakh Oxide.

Long ago I used to run a website dedicated to the L5R RPG - my character then was also called Yoritomo Ujiro (but he wasn't a sorcerer), and I decided to re-use the name to represent a little bit of my history in this project.

Sergeant Udo Müller – Talabecland Deserter

It's a hard life in the Lochrafurt halberdiers; meagre pay, no prospects, arduous patrols against beastmen and worse.  It's a wonder anyone would want to sign-up!

Every day when he wakes up Udo asks himself why he joined up, then he asks why he stayed so long before he deserted, then he wonders why he came to Mordheim, before finally he finds the closest bottle and begins drowning his sorrows.

This was a kitbash to fit a character I'd already written.  The body/head/arm with bottle are from the Greatswords kit (the bottle was possibly from a Bretonnian kit, but I don't recall).  The arm with the Lucerne Hammer was from a State Trooper set from ages ago (it's a metal piece).

Ubel von Drakwald - Beasthunter

His mind broken, Ubel lives only to hunt and slaughter the beastspawn of Chaos. Hailing from the Drakwald, it was never going to be an easy life for the woodcutter Ubel and his young family; raids by the Ungor were a common occurrence, although Ubel and the other men of the hamlet claimed many of their heads with their trusty axes.

It was his daughter's third birthday when a herd of savage Gor descended on Ubel's hamlet – Ubel was returning from a nearby town with a small, colourfully painted wooden top he had scrimped and saved to get for his beloved Clara when he saw the flames and heard the screams. Charging towards his home, Ubel cut down vile beastmen left and right as he fought to save his family, but it was for nothing; they had been slaughtered by the Gor.

Ubel's mind snapped then, and at that moment he swore to all the gods that would listen that he would exterminate all beastmen.  Drifting from place to place, Ubel follows stories of beastman raids so he can relieve his growing madness with Gor blood.

This is, naturally, the Citadel Beasthunter dramatis personae mini.  I decided to give him a name and induct him into the Hireling Agency for Smithtown (and surrounds).

Tzitzimitl - Amazon

One of the fabled Amazons of Lustria, Tzitzimitl is a strong and fearsome warrior but she was captured from her jungle home and forced to fight with a band of Marienburgers as they sought gold from the temples of Lustria.  Taken against her will to the Old World, then taken as a slave-warrior with her captors to the ruins of Mordheim, the Amazon eventually turned on her slavers; killing them one by one.

Tzitzimitl pledged her spirit to one of her gods, Cipactli, in gratitude for her escape and now fights to earn passage back to her home and tribe.

I knew I wanted an Amazon in the Hireling Agency and originally I had one of the GW Mordheim Amazons that I picked up from ebay.  Unfortunately those minis are not very good so I looked around for an alternative - I came across this Blitzer mini from Star Player and thought it would be a bit different so decided to add her to the collection!

Toirneach of Eataine - Elf Ranger

A self-imposed exile from Ulthuan, Toirneach travels the world seeking ancient relics of his people.  He has followed rumours to the ruined city of Mordheim; one of the warbands fighting for riches there is said to carry an ancient amulet from Baile mór Cladaigh, a long-abandoned Elven settlement.

This is the long OOP Warhammer Quest Elf Ranger.  Way back when this was probably the miniature I painted the best as a youngling - so this time round when I picked it up I was determined to do an even better job! I looked up Japanese art examples of sakura branches and tried a little freehand on his cloak - I used black ink for the branch and a greatly thinned pink for the petals (which I also included on elements on the front of the model).  I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out!

Tobias von Wald - Outlaw

There are many famous outlaws across the known world – the Herrimaults of Bretonnia, Olekska of Ostland and the Vorgrimler Family – to listen to him, Tobias von Wald comes above even those famed criminals!

Thankfully for Tobias there are enough mercenary captains desperate for a skilled marksman that believe his self-praise.

Tobias here was assembled using the Empire Archer bits - I think his torso may have come from the old State Soldiers sprue, but my memory may be a little hazy on that!

The Three Dozen and Three - Acolyte of Tzeentch

The god of secrets is an inscrutable master, but still there are those that seek his favour.  The entity known as the Three Dozen and Three is one (or is that many?) of those who seek the favour of Tzeentch.  As its name suggests, it is in fact a collection of beings and souls bound together at the whim of the Changer of the Ways.

A powerful but capricious sorcerer, the Three Dozen and Three wields dark magic with ease – although the potency varies depending on the dominant personality at the time the spell is cast.

This is a (seemingly now OOP) Sorcerer of Tzeentch from Citadel.  I got it when I first planned to have an Acolyte of each of the Chaos Gods (and one for Undivided) in the Hireling Agency (although I did end up with two for Khorne 😅)

Thovak the Tall - Dwarf Treasure Hunter

Thovak was left on the doorstep of a poor human couple who lived in the foothills around Frugelholm Mountain.  The couple took the baby in, although they knew the child was not a human, they cared for it and loved it as if it were their own blood, naming him Thovak.

As he matured, it became clear why Thovak had been abandoned.  He was freakishly tall for a Dwarf.  He had a natural affinity for the trades of his ancestors; he grew up to be a miner alongside many of the human boys from his village.

Thovak heard of the ruin of Mordheim, and the possibility of making a fortune there with the mysterious 'wyrdstone'.  Wishing to repay his adoptive parents for their kindness, Thovak has travelled to the cursed city, selling his skills to any that will share their crowns with him.

This was a Reaper Miniatures mini I picked up ages ago to include in the Hireling Agency - apparently he's a 'Dwarven Miner Sgt'.  Sadly he's really not in keeping with the various classic Citadel/Marauder Dwarf minis I have so he got a backstory to explain his freakish (for a Dwarf) height.  I added a backpack to this mini (you can make out the butt of a pistol over his hat and part of the pack over his one shoulder) - I think this was a Citadel Dwarf Treasure Hunters backpack that I picked up on eBay.

Thagolz Dead-Eye - Ogre Bounty Hunter

Thagolz is one of the type of Ogres known as Hunters.  Exiled from his tribe many years ago, Thagolz has wandered ever since, never really fitting in anywhere he went.

Unlike most Hunters, who specialise in game, Thagolz has turned his skills towards catching bounties – he's the first known Ogre Bounty Hunter, although he only ever takes on bounties where the living status is optional!

This was kitbashed from spare Ogre bits from a long abandoned project - and some bits from the Ogre Stonehorn Rider (which came out after I'd already given up on WHFB but I needed that crossbow for this concept!). I think there's a couple of bits from the Giant kit in there too...

A Gaggle of Ghosts

When GW released that Mortal Realms partworks magazine the first issue (as always with these things) was heavily reduced to encourage you to start it up... well at the time I had no intention of doing Age of Sigmar, but the sprue of ghosts (I think GW give them the name 'Chainrasps') could be useful for special scenarios and other general shenanigans in games of Mordheim.

So, I dug out some of the last few square plastic bases and got them ready to paint a while ago.

But as part of the organising and the like I've been doing the last few days I dug them out and tried a slightly different paint style than the blue or green ghost paints that GW did (not a slur against those - I've done models in the blue and like how they turned out!) - I wanted a monochrome look like a lot of ghosts do on one of my wife's favourite shows, Supernatural.  So, on top of a white basecoat I used Vallejo Light Grey Wash... and I was very happy with the results, so much so I opted not to highlight at all - making these a pretty easy batch of minis to get done!  I painted the bases and any rocks/tombstones in my normal way and added the flock mix I use for all Mordheim stuff to place these spirits in the same world.

Anyway, here's the painted ghostly chaps - first up the bunch with maces:

And those with axes:

And finally the sword waving bedsheets:

I'm perfectly happy with how these turned out - exactly as I'd pictured in my mind's eye when I first decided to make them monochrome.  Sometimes keeping it simple really is the best option, eh?

Strongarm Steinkopf - Hired Muscle

A simple man with little in the way of ambition, Strongarm Steinkopf is a block of muscle motivated only by simple desires: gold, food, ale and a warm fire.  He has had many jobs over the years: caravan guard, circus entertainer, doorman to the Marienburg Merchant Guild, sergeant in the Wissenland free companies and many more.  What he lacks in intelligence he more than makes up for in strength and determination.

I also gave him a little tattoo on his unarmoured arm:

I got this along with a load of other metal Reaper minis (back before the Bones days) - he's not available in metal anymore it seems, but he can be found in the Bones range under the name Bandit Knocker. He was surprisingly enjoyable to paint - and I'm particularly happy with how his face has turned out!

La Spada - Tilean Duellist

The Tilean known only as La Spada is a duellist of dark and dangerous repute.  For years he plied his trade across the Old World, serving as a proxy in duels for wealthy merchants and effete nobles.  Each time he
won, typically cutting his opponents to ribbons in the process, and left with a pouch full of gold crowns.

La Spada thirsts for a greater challenge; the reputation of the Cursed City has attracted him, as has the stories of the skilled warriors that have gathered there.  He now sells his services to whoever will pay his fee – as long as there are opponents to kill, La Spada is satisfied.

This chap is one of the long OOP Vespero's Vendetta from Citadel's (now defunct) Dogs of War range.  I deliberately went with a sinister looking skin tone for this chap.

Skritrit Venomblade - Clan Eshin Assassin

The Skaven of Clan Eshin are no strangers to hiring themselves out to the other clans – their assassins have ended (and started) many conflicts amongst the Skaven.  Skritrit Venomblade has been tasked by Lord Sneek himself to infiltrate the warbands of rival clans that have descended upon the man-city of Mordheim.  Skritrit has served alongside bands from Mors, Pestilens and Skryre – gathering information and reducing their influence and power where needed.

This is an old Skaven Assassin - I originally planned an Eshin warband, but couldn't get a look I was happy with for most of the warband so Skritrit here joined the Hireling Agency instead!

Skazog Gitkilla - Black Orc

Skazog Gitkilla is a typical Black Orc; tall, strong, well-armed and a formidable warrior.  He fights in the ruins of Mordheim alongside the various Orc warbands that have come to krump; he remains disdainful of the undisciplined Greenskins though and will often hand out a beating to those that don't 'stick to da plan'.

This is, obviously, a modern (well, by my GW standards) Black Orc, but I'm guessing it's OOP now since they switched to those Orruk things.  I tried some Orcish dags and checks on some of the armour plates, which turned out quite well (even if they aren't really visible in the photo 😅)

Sigismund the Righteous - Prophet of Doom

A particularly zealous Prophet of the End Times, Sigismund is utterly devoted to Sigmar.  He preaches atonement for sins through flagellation and has a sizeable following amongst the Flagellants, particularly those that gather around the various Witch Hunter bands that have descended upon Mordheim.

Sigismund's mere presence spurs Flagellants to ever greater acts of atonement – many is the enemy of Sigmar that has fallen beneath flail and club as the fiery preacher looks on, delivering an apocalyptic sermon.

Sigismund here was cobbled together out of spare Flagellant bits.  I went for a Sigmarite 'S' and some 'text' on the book using chestnut ink - I think it has turned out alright.
