Here we go with Malifaux

I'd been interested in Malifaux for quite some time - in the days of 2nd edition I picked up Mei Feng's starter set - the Rail Crew box.  To that I added the (then) Rail Golem, Fuhatsu and a box of Metal Gamin.  I also acquired Johanna (the female alt version of Johan) when she was released.

I picked up the two player starter set too - which added some Guild and Neverborn to the collection.  I got lucky right at the tail end of 2nd edition and bought a second hand Lilith crew as well as Lelu and Lilitu to go with it.  These were all stored away, joining the pile of future glory.

Then third edition came around - I got the rulebook and the Dead Man's Hand card pack (seeing as Lilith is gone from the mainstream game now) and recently I got a great deal on a second hand McMourning crew (the 2nd edition version - and with a bonus Flesh Construct - all on resin scenic bases).  To this I added a second hand pack of Canine Remains that I got at a great price.

All good stuff, I've not covered it here to date as it's all prepped and primed and black undercoated minis don't make for great pictures (even less than bare metal or plastic does).

Anyway, fast forward a few weeks and I've been diagnosed with depression... working on various things to try to help it, but the doctor actually advised I 'treat myself'... well my mind turned to Malifaux once more... the only decision really was what to get.  I had a generous amount to spend on it, but just couldn't decide what to go for.  I had a chat with my wife and she suggested that I go for adding various other crews to the collection to keep things varied for us.  So, I shopped around for the best deals and after a few days (the longest it has ever taken me to spend my monthly hobby funds!) I placed some orders and a couple of them have arrived!

So, what did I get?

First up was the Ophelia box - this was one of the crews I've almost picked up lots of times before so it was a bit of a certainty it would join the collection this time!

To this I added the Copycats box to bring in some more of the LaCroix!

Another starter box I knew I wanted was the Perdita one - to me the Ortegas are iconic and jump to mind when I think of Malifaux:

To this starter I added the Latigo Reserves box - I particularly like the female Monster Hunter that is shown on the box!

Now, although I had Johanna from before, I couldn't take her with Mei Feng anymore so I checked out the Outcasts starter boxes - I ended up going for the Viktorias:

I picked out the Loyalty to Coin box to add to this core box - I love the Student of Conflict mini in this particular box:

Similarly to Johanna, if I intend to use Mei Feng as an Arcanist crew (which I do) then Fuhatsu would be surplus to requirements... off to the Ten Thunders section it was then... where I opted for the Misaki core box:

I've got another little addition to provide some more options for this crew, but it hasn't arrived yet - I'll share it on the blog when it does come!

Finally for crews I went back and forth a long time...I liked Asami, Kirai, even pondered Leveticus for a time... but I plumped for Som'er Teeth Jones in the end.  The crazy Gremlins are a bit of light relief after looking at lots of serious historical miniatures for a while now - I think I need something that I don't just appreciate but that makes me smile.

I knew I'd likely need some Bayou Gremlins minis, so I bought the Deliverance box too (the Spit Hog looks a cracking miniature though, so I'd likely have got this anyway!)

As the Bayou Gremlins are versatile and will work with Ophelia too, I decided the Big Hat keyword deserved another box - well, the choice was made for me as only Hootenanny was in stock (but this was probably the one I'd have picked anyway!):

Banjo playing Gremlins, what's not to like?! The swamp dwelling Gremlins of Malifaux have certainly captured my imagination!

Finally, having spent a lot of time on the Malifaux Crew Builder I decided that to put everything on a roughly even playing field I needed to boost the McMourning collection a little.  I opted for the alt version of the Rogue Necromancy:

That gives me plenty to be getting on with - although, being a wargamer I'm already plotting other purchases for several of the crews... just for variety I'm sure you'll understand! 😉
